HIDDEN FORTRESS

My heart is a dam

that once

ran free

before the

magpies

barked

&

the eyes

drew

blood

my heart is a dam

that once

ran free

before all

the naked

Sunday

mornings

&

the dollars

blowing in

the

wind

my heart is a dam

that once

ran free

before the

violins turned

back into

trees

&

my name

sounded so

different

my heart is a dam

that once

ran free

before the

final

mistake

&

that last

goodbye

my heart is a dam

that once

ran free

&

I do my

best

to keep

it that

way:

don’t

you…

 A POEMS WORTH

She was about

to finish work

at the Laundromat

and we had been

talking for several

hours

I asked her if she

wanted to come to

my apartment and

I would read her

some poems I had

recently written

she accepted the

offer

after I read one

we started kissing

and a little later

were naked and

had sex on the

floor

it was some of the

best sex I ever

had

she left to meet

her partner

and I decided to

write this poem

as a reminder

that poetry does

pay

sometimes.

SURVIVAL

Sometimes

I wonder

if you

still think

of me

like I

think of

you

and the

answer is

always

yes:

it’s easier

that way.
